** ADVANCE FOR MONDAY, JAN. 20 ** A white-winged vampire bat pup, that researchers are saying is the first captive birth in the United States of the rare vampire bat, is shown in Tijeras, N.M., Dec. 26, 2002. A colony of the bats was rescued from the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad. The bats were being eradicated on the island so researches worked to get the bats sent to the U.S. where a breeding colony of the rare bird blood feeding bats could be started and studied.
